1966 World Cup Final, The

The 30th July 1966 is a date that is etched in the minds of all English football fans. It was the day that football really did come home to the country that invented the beautiful game. In front of a capacity crowd at Wembley Stadium, Alf Ramsey's team played their part in one of the most memorable World Cup finals in the history of football, beating West Germany 4-2. As Geoff Hurst was scoring his third goal in the last minute of extra time, the crowd had begun to invade the pitch and BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme, uttered the immortal words 'Some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over. It is now!' Her Majesty the Queen handed the Jules Rimet Trophy to the captain, Bobby Moore and England were crowned World Cup winners amid magical scenes, which have become some of the most famous in living history.
